Jack Dorsey Launches Bitchat: Offline Encrypted Messaging Poised for Festival Use

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has officially launched Bitchat, a new decentralized messaging app designed to operate entirely offline using Bluetooth mesh networking. This innovative app enables users to send encrypted messages without requiring internet or servers, offering a promising communication alternative especially useful in festival environments where connectivity often falters.

Bitchat builds on concepts from earlier mesh networking apps like FireChat and Bridgefy but aims to improve on their limitations by providing end-to-end encryption and a more resilient mesh network. Currently in beta and limited to 10,000 testers via Apple’s TestFlight, Bitchat’s technology was detailed in an open technical whitepaper on GitHub.

Festival-goers and tech enthusiasts on Reddit’s r/festivals subreddit have noted that while mesh networking is not new, Bitchat benefits from strong backing and contemporary security features, which could finally make peer-to-peer offline messaging practical on large scales. Some users also humorously discussed the app’s name and compared it to past attempts like Yik Yak, while others recommended established alternatives like Meshtastic for current reliable mesh-based messaging during fests.

With real-world festival settings often plagued by overloaded cellular networks and spotty Wi-Fi, Bitchat’s offline encrypted messaging could revolutionize how attendees stay connected with friends, find lost parties, or share immediate updates securely, all without relying on commercial internet infrastructure.
